Introduction

Below are responses to arguments against an old earth. These challenges are generally posed by Young Earth Creationists (YECs), with the intention of pointing out why belief in an old earth is incorrect.

These arguments are well-intentioned, and I feel no grudge or animous toward Christians who make them. However, these arguments pose a very real problem for Christians who know God's Word is true, but understand mainstream science too well to believe the earth is young.

Flood-related Arguments

Genesis 1:6-8 - The Argument: The upper waters were above the sky, just as scripture says. They were the flood-gates of Heaven from Genesis 7:11.

2 Peter 3:5 - The Argument: Scoffers of Christ's return will deny that the waters of Creation were used to destroy the earth in Noah's flood.

Evolution-related and "Original Sin" Arguments

Original Sin and Death, Our Death in Adam - The Argument: Physical death entered the world through Adam (Original Sin), just as eternal life comes through Jesus. Therefore, Evolution could not have occurred. (Genesis 3:6-7, 1 Corinthians 15:21-22, Romans 5:12)

Genesis 3:14-15 - The Argument: Snakes had legs in the Garden of Eden, so Evolution cannot be true.

Genesis 3:20 - The Argument: Eve's name means she is the mother of mankind. Therefore, all people descend from her and Evolution cannot be true.

Genesis 5:1-3 - The Argument: Genesis 5:1 clearly states that mankind descends from Adam, so Evolution cannot be true.
